Today we visited the Martiros Saryan Museum and explored many of his remarkable paintings. I noticed that Saryan pays great attention to small details, and each of his works carries a deep and thoughtful meaning.
One painting that truly stood out to me was Three Years. It portrays Saryan at three different stages of his life – as a child, a young man, and an old man. It’s the only painting that left a strong impression on me.
The first period, “Fairy Tales and Dreams” features watercolor paintings using the wet paper technique, blending fantasy and folklore. The second period, influenced by his travels to Egypt, is more vibrant, incorporating symbols like pyramids, masks, and the Armenian symbol of eternity.
After returning to Armenia, Saryan built his home, designed by architect Alexander Tamanyan. In 1967, a museum was added beside it, making him one of the rare artists to witness the opening of a museum dedicated to his work during his lifetime.
After the museum, we went out to eat and enjoyed a pleasant time together.

Martiros Saryan was born on February 16 (28), 1880, in Nor Nakhijevan. He was a prominent Armenian painter, often called the “master of colors” or the “magician of colors.”
Saryan’s ancestors had emigrated from Ani to Crimea, then to Nor Nakhijevan. In 1895, he graduated from the Armenian-Russian school in Nor Nakhijevan, in 1903, from the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, and improved his skills in the studios of Valentin Serov and Konstantin Korovin. During his studies, he created “Self-portrait”, “Mayravank” (1902), portraits of his mother, Ustiyan Saryan (1898) and Sofya Miansaryan (1903).
In 1901, he first visited Yerevan, Ashtarak, Vagharshapat, Sevan, and in 1902, Ani.
“Nature creates man so that he can see himself and admire himself through man…” — Martiros Saryan
He considered a miracle something that many people don’t even notice: color. “I dream about color, color is a real miracle,” he said. Saryan mainly painted images of nature, which I really like.
